atomic cabinet!

Me and Joe made a bit of an impulse buy the other week. We have decided that we want to start replacing the IKEA and gifted furniture that we have to get some more unique pieces. We still enjoy a good trip to the yellow and blue warehouse, but our living room was beginning to look like a picture from one of their catalogues. We began scouring ebay and other websites selling second hand furniture and when we saw the picture of this 50's kitchen cabinet we both loved it instantly, and put an offer in before we'd even bothered to see if it would fit where we'd intended it for, incidentally it didn't! So after rearranging the hall living room and my studio it found a home!

It's currently adorned with some vintage cameras, threads, a 1970's Mickey Mouse alarm clock and some thunderbirds toys. 

bit of new and a bit of old!

We've been in our house for 3 years, and so far the only room we've really injected our personality into was our living room. Finally we have started to make our bedroom a nicer place to be in. Just thought I'd share a few photos. 

On this previously bare wall we now have a selection of cards and postcards in various frames. We plan to add a few embroidery hoops too, with some lovely fabrics and perhaps the cross stitch I am working on. I also love how easy it is to change the look of your room by putting in new images or swopping the frames round.

We also bought this piece of furniture from a charity shop the other week. It's so lovely to have something you know won't be in lots of other homes, as most of our furniture is from Ikea. Even better the dresser only cost £20! I just love it's 50's feel. We'll be on the hunt for more stuff like this from now on!

The Public

I am currently working on a Creative Partnership project in a secondary school, and as part of it I organised a trip to The Public http://www.thepublic.com/ in West Bromwich. It was also my first visit, and I have to say it was fantastic! Unfortunately we didn't have the time to fully explore the space, but this was only because the education team put on an awesome workshop for the children.

It really is a great place to give children a different slant on what art and a gallery can be, so despite all the controversy about the projects cost I can say it is worth it. I just hope that it will get the use it deserves and that it will break down barriers.

Many people don't even think to go into galleries, but speaking from my experience of working at the New Art Gallery Walsall, galleries can really become the hub of a community through putting on fantastic events and workshops.
